About QataREEF Project

QATAREEF is a pilot project for an innovative coral reef restoration solution.

It consists of promoting the natural colonization of custom-designed artificial reefs, which are then relocated to restore corals damaged by industrial or natural causes.

In May 2022, 18 artificial reefs were submerged in two locations near Halul Island. The coral development on these artificial reefs have been monitored for two years, following which they will be deployed to new areas in the coming months and will be further monitored to ensure healthy growth and recolonization of the new areas with corals.

QATAREEF is sponsored by TotalEnergies Research & Development in collaboration with Qatar University and Seaboost.
